WeatherNet, In-Depth

What Exactly Is This AirWatch System?

The AirWatch System is comprised of 3 main components: the weather station, interactive software and curriculum, and membership in the Worldwide School Weather Network (which includes News 4 San Antonio's WeatherNet Program).

The weather station is completely automated, and includes the following parts:

The software interface allows your school's MAC or PC computer to display the weather data on a monitor. It can also access up to four months of historical weather information stored on any "Master Control Unit". With an Internet connection users can access that weather data from the over 2500 other AirWatch weather stations located across the United States, and in places as far away as Nagano, Japan and Christ Church, New Zealand. Imagine being able to download, compare, analyze, graph and map all of this information with the click of a mouse button! Wow!

There are four different levels of educational curriculum and investigational activities that cover grades K-12. These guides help teachers integrate the weather station into every classroom (from math and science to geography and language arts!) and assist in fully utilizing this hands on, real world application. You will be able to create a program or unit in weather which will provide your school with a practical, and fun, use of Internet and telecommunications technology that meet the National Education Standards for Science and Math.

Learning has never been so much fun!

Finally, one of the most exciting components of the AirWatch System is the participation in our WeatherNet Program on News 4. All of us in the News4 San Antonio Weather Center use the AirWatch Weather Station here at the station to download data from all participating schools. This added data helps us track local weather patterns and prepare our daily forecasts. Plus, we highlight different schools each night during our weathercast and on our Home Page to showcase your school's real-time weather.

Why Are We Doing This?

WeatherNet is a powerful academic tool which can be used to develop a better understanding of meteorology and related sciences. The AWS system is also Internet ready. When your school goes online, our WeatherNet Program is synchronous. News 4 San Antonio is a strong advocate of quality education and is thrilled to be able to provide such a dynamic teaching tool to area students.
